The Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs will grant scholarships to 350 Somali students who cannot get a proper education in Somalia, the Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.
Given the fact that many students want to study in Turkey, the number of applications soon outnumbered the available scholarships. The Somali Ministry of Education, thus, developed an exam to select the best candidates among the applicants. The 600 students who were successful in the exam will have to take another test at the coordination office of the Religious Affairs Directorate for the final selection. Three hundred students will be able to attend high schools in Turkey, while 50 of them will go to universities. It is not clear, however, whether the 50 students will undertake religious study or not.
The Directorate of Religious Affairs grants scholarships to successful students in Turkey regardless of field of study.
"We began to interview those students in order to select 350 of them to send to Turkey for education," Veysi Kaya, program coordinator of Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs in Somalia, told Anatolia. He said the interviews are expected to be finished within a week.
After the interviews, the students will be arriving in Turkey in a month's time.
The Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs in Somalia assists the Somali government in religious affairs. It also organized the distribution of aid that was collected by the Directorate of Religious Affairs in Ankara by mobilizing people across Turkey, especially after the famine that hit Somalia over the summer.
