Portland School Board to discuss next steps for dual language immersion | OregonLive.com

A week into a new school year that started with four new dual language immersion programs in Portland Public Schools, the district school board will discuss further expanding dual language options.

In Portland, students can take dual immersion classes in Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, Russian and Vietnamese. Somali could be next, according to a draft list of recommendations to be presented to the board on Tuesday.
Immersion programs, in which teachers deliver lessons in both English and another language, have been lauded for closing the achievement gap between native English speaking students and their non-native English speaking peers.
The latest recommendations from a group tasked with finding ways to beef up Portland’s program include launching a Somali immersion program either in the Wilson, Madison or Roosevelt clusters as early as next fall.
The group will also recommend launching dual immersion programs for preschool students, continuing to expand Spanish language immersion programs into outer Southeast and North and Northeast Portland and creating a second Chinese program in outer Southeast Portland.
The school board will also receive an update on teacher evaluations after their successful push to delay implementation of Common Core in Portland.
