allAfrica.com: Somalia Launches Vaccination Campaign Against Polio, Measles

The Somali Ministry of Health on Wednesday (October 8th) launched a vaccination campaign to inoculate children in Benadir and Lower Jubba regions against polio and measles, Somalia's Goobjoog News reported.
The campaign is expected to reach more than 20,000 children.
Minister of Health Ali Mohamed Mohamud urged parents to take their children to vaccination centres so they can receive the immunisations.
He also held a meeting with United Nations officials in Mogadishu to discuss other facets of the federal government's efforts to prevent the spread of polio and measles. Somalia has struggled to contain polio in the country, and its efforts have been hampered by widespread conflict and al-Shabaab's refusal to distribute vaccines in areas under its control.

  1. Measles have an incubation period of six to nineteen days, but the usual number is set at two weeks. The disease is very infectious. A sick person is infectious about seven days before the rash occurs and for a further five days after its occurrence.
